ADAVB Inner Melbourne Group Meeting

Implant overdentures represent an important treatment option in contemporary prosthodontics, offering improved stability, retention, and function compared with conventional complete dentures. They provide a predictable and versatile approach for managing edentulous patients, particularly where anatomical limitations, patient expectations, or treatment considerations may make fixed implant rehabilitation less suitable. Successful outcomes rely on careful treatment planning, appropriate implant selection, prosthetic design, and long-term maintenance.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the indications, advantages, and limitations of implant overdentures as a treatment option for edentulous patients.
  • Compare implant overdentures with conventional complete dentures and fixed implant prostheses in terms of retention, stability, function, and patient-centred outcomes.
  • Identify key considerations in treatment planning and prosthetic design, including patient selection, anatomical factors, implant number and distribution, and attachment systems.
  • Discuss the principles of long-term maintenance and management of complications to support the longevity and success of implant overdenture therapy.
