How to perform the perfect New Patient Examination
Presented by Dr Kalyan Voruganti
A new patient examination can be daunting. Finding a simple, effective, repeatable workflow is key. This will help you win the patient over, diagnose what you need to and encourage them to book in so that you can perform the necessary treatment. We will cover the basics of building rapport, taking notes, photos and verbal skills.
You will learn to:
- build a rapport with your patients
- take the right photos and efficient notes
- manage planning more complicated cases.
Getting patients on board with your ideal treatment plan

When conveying dental conditions and treatment options to patients, it is important to ensure that we communicate effectively. Learn why some patients may not uptake treatment from you and strategies to prevent this.
You will learn to:
- deeply connect with the patient and address their concerns
- understand different ways in which people communicate
- implement different communication styles to convert patients
- present treatment choices efficiently with genuine informed consent.
How to predictably have patients book in for treatment
Presented by Dr Becky Chen
Often times, we might dread patients’ rejection or objections. However, it is only when we tackle the obstacles head-on that we can predictably gain consistent case acceptance from our patients. Learn how to onboard the patient with a treatment plan you are proud to deliver.
You will learn to:
- bring the patient along the journey to improve their oral health
- discuss treatment costs clearly
- clear obstacles which may prevent patients from case acceptance
- close the deal and perform an effective handover.

Presented by Dr Kalyan Voruganti
Don’t let fear get the best of you, it’s tough being a new graduate. It can be nerve racking managing patients, performing procedures and upskilling - while comparing yourself to your peers on social media. We will cover simple, effective ways to give you the confidence you need, even when things aren’t going to plan.
You will learn to:
- know when to tackle a new procedure and when to refer
- begin that new procedure confidently
- get help when things aren’t going to plan without losing face in front of the patient
- deal with difficult patients.

Speakers
Dr Kalyan Voruganti
Dr Voruganti graduated with merit from the University of Cardiff dental school in 2005 and has proudly called himself a Victorian for over 12 years. He is currently principal dentist of North Fitzroy Dental and director of Smileworks Dental Kensington. Both practices currently employ a mix of dentists and OHT’s and are centred around CPD and clinician growth. Dr Voruganti enjoys mentoring in the field of dentistry and is currently teaching with the General Dental Residency (GDR) scheme as a mentor. He also trains younger dentists and new graduates, helping them in particular with communication and case planning. Dr Voruganti has been featured on podcasts such as Dental Head Start. He is also involved with the Australian Dental Students association and frequently has Dentists and OHT’s observe him working. Dr Voruganti enjoys a wide range of dentistry including implants, full mouth rehabilitation and Invisalign.
Dr Becky Chen
Dr Chen graduated from the University Of Melbourne in 2008 and is the principal dentist at Ballarat Family Dental. She is a certified social and emotional intelligence coach, as well as a neuro linguistic programming practitioner. Dr Chen’s practice has historically taken on new graduate dentists, as well as OHTs to join her team. Coming from a family of educators, she has a special interest in mentoring and public speaking to share her knowledge. Dr Chen has spoken at dental events such as the Dental Practice Owners’ Conference, at final year dental and OHT student events as well as being one of the mentors for GDR. She sees her own practice as a training ground to facilitate clinician growth, so that true potential can be reached. Dr Chen enjoys practising orthodontics and family dentistry. In particular, she finds working with anxious patients to convert them into confident patients most rewarding.
