SAVING THE PERIODONTALLY COMPROMISED TOOTH:
Decision-making around the retention or extraction of periodontally compromised teeth remains a complex and often controversial aspect of clinical practice. Through a review of prognostic indicators, long-term evidence, and clinical cases, tooth-based prognostication systems will be explored, including the critical role of patient-level factors as key determinants of tooth survival.

Dr Alana Smith BDS (Distn) (Otago), DClinDent (Melb), MRACDS (Periodontics)
Dr Alana Smith is a specialist Periodontist in private practice in Melbourne and Geelong. She completed her undergraduate dental training at the University of Otago and her specialist postgraduate training at the University of Melbourne. Her professional interests include the treatment of periodontal disease, soft tissue grafting and implant dentistry. Dr Smith is a committee member of the Australian Society of Periodontology Victorian Branch, co-director of the ADAVB Inner Melbourne Group Study Club and has served as a clinical demonstrator and examiner for dental students.
