Oral surgery: Flap designs, suturing flaps, socket preservation
Gain hands-on skills in oral surgery focusing on basic surgical skills.
You will learn how to:
- Perform different types of suturing on rubber pseudo skin
- Design and raise a basic flap on pig jaws with teeth
- Suture in a reduced access area
- Ensure proper retraction and positioning of the assistant
- Undertake biopsy incision and excision
- Undertake socket preservation.

Dr Sophia Richardson
Sophia is a Melbourne-trained Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, with international experience. She obtained her Dental and Medical degrees at The University of Melbourne, then completed Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training in Victoria (2011). She chose to further subspecialise in orthognathic surgery at The Royal Melbourne Hospital (2012), and was then appointed the Clinical Fellow at The Oxford University Hospitals Trust, UK (2013-2014).
Sophia is currently in private practice in Fitzroy, Clayton, Vermont, and Dandenong. She also has public appointments at Monash Health, the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne.
