Periodontal soft tissue surgery and grafting

Online lecture: 1.5 hours

Hard and soft tissue defects are a common occurrence around both teeth and dental implants. This lecture will examine where soft and/or hard tissue grafting is beneficial in the management of such defects. You will be introduced to management techniques for these defects using autogenous tissue as well as the range of xenogenic membranes and regeneration products used in dentistry. Takeaway an understanding of the role of various membranes in dental practice and their practical application.

You will learn about:

  • Periodontal hard and soft tissue defects
  • Peri-implant hard and soft tissue defects
  • Grafting defects using autogenous and xenogenic materials

Hands-on grafting

Hands-on component: 3 hours + 0.5 hour for Q&A + discussion

Receive an introduction to grafting techniques (using a pig jaw model), with a specific focus on the flap design and surgical technique for soft and hard tissue grafting. Learn about the advantages and disadvantages of different suture materials and appreciate the different knots available and the indications for each one.

You will:

  • Undertake benchtop exercises on a pig-jaw model with a focus on surgical technique for soft and hard tissue grafting  
  • Undertake exercises using grafting material to allow an understanding of material handling and placement technique
  • Be given the opportunity to practice and refine your suturing technique for different flap designs and suture materials

This event is a two-part blended model - recorded lecture and workshop. Once registered, you will receive confirmation for the workshop held on Wednesday 30 October 2024.

This module also includes a 1.5-hour lecture, which you must view prior to the workshop. This is accessed via MOHTEC's Canvas program. MOHTEC will provide you with a link via email after registration.

Speakers

Dr Luan Ngo 

Graduating with honours from the University of Melbourne in 1999, Dr Ngo worked in both public and private practice until 2003, when he commenced a PhD in the field of periodontics looking at biomarkers for periodontal disease. He completed the didactic component of his specialist training in periodontics in 2009. Since then, Dr Ngo has been working in both private practice and as an academic at the University of Melbourne.

Dr Ngo has travelled to Vietnam with the Rotary Australia-Vietnam Dental Health Project. He volunteered his time in both the education of periodontists (in training) at the National Hospital of Odontostomatology in Ho Chi Minh City, as well as providing needed dental care for rural school children in the south of Vietnam.

Dr Ngo is currently the lecturer in periodontics and convenor of the undergraduate (now graduate entry) periodontics program at the Melbourne Dental School. He is a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in the specialist field of periodontics.
