Shared Management of the Medically Complex Paediatric Patient
Understanding the paediatric patient with special health care needs and establishing a dental home.
As the number of paediatric patients living with special healthcare needs increases, dental practitioners play a vital role in providing them with the appropriate dental care and prevention. There is a well-established link between oral health and overall health. Evidence suggests that access to timely dental care is a challenge for these families. Therefore, close collaboration between the medical teams, dental practitioners in the community and hospitals is paramount.
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
- Understand broadly how to obtain a good medical history and examine a patient with special healthcare needs.
- Identify common paediatric medical conditions that require special consideration in the provision of optimal oral health care.
- Able to know how/when to reach out to RCH (dental/medical) for advice or referral.
- Implement preventive visits as part of shared care with RCH.
