Are you a creature of habit when purchasing equipment?
When it comes to purchasing consumables, instruments and equipment we often stick to what we know best. We all have our favourite brands, makes and models and we are not asking you to break with tradition for the sake of it.
ADA Guidelines and Standards for reprocessing reusable [medical] devices RMDs - AS5369:2023 ask us to consider our purchases to ensure we are able to implement the manufacturer’s instructions for use, and reprocess the RMDs safely in a timely manner.
In addition, the process of validating sterilisers has changed, requiring the technician to complete all aspects of annual performance qualification. The implications of this includes longer time onsite and the cost for this service. If you are not familiar with these changes you can find more information here.
You might be surprised to learn there may be saving to be made by thinking more about these changes, your processes and future purchasing options.
If you don’t personally reprocess instruments, you may not be aware that the typical steriliser in use:
- Has a capacity range of 17 to 28 litres.
- Based on a mix of pouch sizes, a typical load contain 20 to 25 pouches.
- Every cycle requires a log of contents ‘steriliser cycle log’ to be created prior to loading.
- Documented verification on completion.
- Each unit requires two test cycles every day prior to being productive, these must be documented, and one test cycle requires the use of a test device.
- Require validation annually which now requires the technician to complete the entire process – e.g.: typically, five cycles in total.
If you’re a busy practice with multiple units e.g.: two or more, have you considered what the ongoing implications are?
- The test device and consumables for daily air removal steam penetration test for each unit.
- The cost of validating each unit annually.
- Downtime while this is done.
- The time to document loads, tests and results and scan or store documents for the future.
Unfortunately, the more units you have, the higher the running and compliance costs are likely to be.
When you are considering a new steriliser, explore the options of a larger benchtop unit, as there are some on the market now that are 50L in capacity. These units may accommodate approximately 50 to 60 pouches [mixed sized] per load, this reduces the number loads performed daily and the associated documentation and time.
Remember, the first purchase consideration should always be, can you physically accommodate the equipment and do you have the supporting amenities available. You may be surprised what is possible.
