Sustainability in dentistry

The FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) “Sustainability in Dentistry” Awards offer global recognition to dental professionals who are leading the way in efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the industry. Among the winners announced during the 2024 World Dental Congress in Istanbul was Victoria’s very own Dr Robert Panjkov.

Dr Panjkov was one of two winners selected in the Individual Category, which honours dental professionals who have taken significant steps in the implementation of sustainable practices in their dental operations.

Dr Panjkov’s practice, Beaconsfield Dental, has long pioneered progressive approaches to sustainability, both in its own work and in its broader advocacy within the sector. The practice has utilised solar panels, solar hot water, rainwater collection, composting, energy-saving building design, energy efficient appliances and lighting in its daily operations, and is constantly seeking new ways to improve its environmental performance. Dr Panjkov has also been influential in his work with the ADAVB through the contribution of several articles detailing ways in which dental practices can boost their approaches to sustainability.

According to the FDI, the global healthcare sector is responsible for around five per cent of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, and the FDI Sustainability in Dentistry Awards offer us a valuable opportunity to pause and reflect on the role that we all have to play in reducing our environmental footprint.
